Throughout Obama's speech he uses many different ways of connecting with reader, some in which were used correctly and others not so well. I will provide a few examples which exploits some of his attempts to the readers using ethos, logos, and pathos.
Ex 1:
"We
all know the story of Abraham and Isaac. Abraham is ordered by God to offer up
his only son, and without argument, he takes Isaac to the mountaintop, binds
him to an altar, and raises his knife, prepared to act as God has commanded.
Of
course, in the end God sends down an angel to intercede at the very last
minute, and Abraham passes God's test of devotion.
But
it's fair to say that if any of us leaving this church saw Abraham on a roof of
a building raising his knife, we would, at the very least, call the police and
expect the Department of Children and Family Services to take Isaac away from
Abraham. We would do so because we do not hear what Abraham hears, do not see
what Abraham sees, true as those experiences may be. So the best we can do is
act in accordance with those things that we all see, and that we all hear, be
it common laws or basic reason."- Barack Obama
Here he does a good job at appealing to logos, our character by use God as a way to do so. Although he does this well, it still may not appeal everyone due to different beliefs. Not only does this message have a bit of logos, but it also has an appeal to pathos because he tests the audiences imagination and sympathetic side by refering to the near death of Abraham. This is an excellent example of logos and pathos which helps Baracks point tremendously.
Ex 2:
Imagine
Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address without reference to "the judgments of
the Lord." Or King's I Have a Dream speech without references to "all
of God's children." Their summoning of a higher truth helped inspire what
had seemed impossible, and move the nation to embrace a common destiny.
In this example Barrack has a hint of logos, by providing an idea and backing it some sense of logic but it is very opinionated and he doesnt have much to support his claim besides his veiw of how it would be if they hadnt summoned the higher truth. This is a bad example of logos that was attempted to be used by Obama. By providing even a sentence or two of backround information would make this claim much more logical rather than an open-ended opinion.
Ex 3:
This
brings me to my second point. Democracy demands /,that the religiously
motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than
religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to
argument, and amenable to reason. I may be opposed to abortion for religious
reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply
point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why
abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths,
including those with no faith at all.
Pathos is something that is used is this paragraph because it allows the audience to indetify his point of view and connect in a way that is reasonable and understandable. By presenting his voice and tone in a way that is easy to connect with and an open mind makes it easy for the audience to understand his point of view. Using this approach works well for him in this situation because he is addressing something that is logical and does it in open minded matter.
These are few examples, good and bad, that help Barack get his point across. There are many other examples that are exemplified throughout his speech but these are a few that are great example of logos and pathos along with another bad representation of logos.
